Pre-Season Indoor Nets

With the exciting new season fast approaching it is time to dust off your pads, find your bat and get some practice in. Pre-season practice nets have been booked in the main sports hall at the Towers School. They are booked from 7.00pm to 8.30pm every Tuesday starting on February 19th with the last session on 27th March.
 
The cost is £3.00 per person per week.
 

The Six-A-Side tournament returns for 2013

In a bid to increase funds for the Pavilion Project, the hugely successful Six-A-Side competition makes a welcome return for 2013 after nearly a 10 year absence.
 
The competition will be held on Sunday 25th August, with the bank holiday following on the Monday. This means that this year our visitors can enjoy a drink, safe in the knowledge that they won’t have to get up for work early in the morning.
 
If you would like to enter a team, or if you are just interested in playing please let us know as soon as possible as places are very limited.
 
We will aim to have many side attractions this year to maximise fundraising and keep everyone entertained throughout the day.
 
More details will be released as they become available, but in the meantime please add this date to your diaries and tell your friends and colleagues of the event.

The Kent Regional League structure for 2013 has just been released.

 
As expected the 1sts are in Championship East along with some old rivals such as Mersham, Old Hartsdonians and St Margarets. The 2nds are in Division 2B (East) which is one higher than expected because there is no 2C (East) this year. Full line-ups below. Fixtures will not be out until after Christmas and we’ve been asked to keep 19 weeks free which means friendlies can’t be completed until after the full League fixture list is finalised.

Barrow Hill Veterinary Hospital will be sponsoring KCC in 2013

 
The Barrow Hill group of veterinary practices who own surgeries in Ashford, Hythe and New Romney will be sponsoring the Club throughout the 2013 season.
 
With a dedicated team of vets and nurses available twenty four hours a day, every day of the year, Barrow Hill is Ashford’s only hospital standard practice, independently inspected by the RCVS and awarded its highest classification for a veterinary practice.

This year the Annual General Meeting will be held at the Club on Friday 9th November starting at 7.30pm and is OPEN TO ALL.

 
Please put this date in your diary and make every effort to attend. An agenda for the meeting will be released nearer the time, but there will be some important issues discussed that you will want to have your say on.

The proceedure for the election of club officials will remain as last year with all positions subject to a formal nomination and election process as per the Club Constitution. This requires that written nominations are sent to the Club Secretary BEFORE 26TH OCTOBER.

Kennington Cricket Club returned from their post-season tour to Majorca as champions in a triangular tournament with Mallorca Cricket Club and powerful Derbyshire league outfit West Hallam.

 
In the opening game against West Hallam Kennington reached a formidable 191 for 5 led by Grant Langfield with 84 from 45 balls supported by Josh Last’s 53 from 36. Though only winning by 8 runs the margin of victory was only that narrow due to 21 from the final over with the game already in the bag.
 
Batting first against Balearic champions Mallorca Kennington again reached a challenging score of 173 for 7, Langfield again top scoring with 45 backed up by Nathan Last’s 36. In reply the hosts were never in the contest with tight spells from Chris Drakeley, David Finch and Peter Grant.
 
The following day’s return match with West Hallam saw Kennington restrict the northerners to just 112 for 6 with an all slow attack including impressive contributions from veteran Ray Lancaster and overseas star Dev Patel. The runs were easily achieved in just 11 overs with another fine 50 by Josh Last from 30 balls and 21 by Chris Watts from 13.
 
Tour sponsors Applicado Cheer were represented by owner Adrian Blakeley who generously covered the cost of the fantastic tour shirts.

In a surprise turn of events, Kennington CC 1st XI have finished top of the Kent Regional Cricket League Division 1A Central, gaining promotion to Championship East in 2013.

 
Huge thanks and congratulations go to captain Chris Watts and to everyone who has represented the 1st XI this year. A fantastic effort from everyone and a well deserved promotion.
 
Having been level on points with Holcombe and Bluebell Hill going into their final game, Kennington 1st XI required maximum points from their final game against The Mote at home, and for Holcombe to fail to acquire the full 20 points against Lordswood. Losing the toss, Kennington were put in to bat and scored a respectable 215 on a pitch with uneven bounce. Kennington then went on to bowl The Mote out for 80, and with news that Holcombe and Bluebell Hill had failed to bowl Lordswood out and claim the full 20 points, were proclaimed champions of the 2012 Kent Regional Cricket League Division 1A Central.

Having accepted the grant of £50,000 from Sport England through their ‘Inspired Facilities’ programme, the development of the pavilion is now underway.

 
A small sub-committee has been established to oversee the whole project, which will start with internal surveys to discover what members would like to see in the new pavilion. This committee, comprising of Treasurer John Cunningham, Chairman Geoff Prior and President Peter Grant will take things forward and will report back regularly to the main club committee with updates.
 
A website and full marketing campaign will be launched in due course to build awareness and interest within the community and in a bid to attract commercial investment.
 
With the project unlikely to cost less than about £75,000 and, depending on what we do, could be closer to £100,000, in order to attain such a figure would require a significant fundraising effort from the whole club. Our efforts must now be redoubled as the club will have to find the remainder of this funding. It is quite likely that the majority of this will come through a commercial bank loan but this will, of course, need to be repaid over a period of years. Therefore, if we are to see the clubhouse project come to fruition, we will need a consistent and concerted fund raising effort throughout the club. Everyone will benefit hugely from the new facilities and everyone will need to pull their weight in ensuring it is built to the highest standard so that the club can go from strength to strength.
 
The Pavilion Committee have begun compiling a list of what they would like in the new facility, split into the categories:
 
Definitely Want (in addition to what we’ve currently got): Heating, increased clubroom area, kitchen/bar with shutters (ideally the two separate from each other), security system.
 
Like to Have (if funds allow): Indoor toilets, indoor access to changing rooms, pitched roof, more storage space, lobby/porch, scoring box on 1st floor, improved viewing areas for spectators.
 
Forms will soon be available online and at the bar for you to let us know what you’d like to included in the new build.
 
Please keep an eye out for your opportunity to have your say and to get involved with the project in anyway you can. If you know anyone outside of the club who may be interested in helping us achieve our goals, please put them in touch with the Pavilion Committee.

We are holding a cricket camp which is open to all children in the Under 12 squads or will be moving up to this next year.

 
This will take place over 4 days from 28th to 31st August at our ground between 10.00 and 4.00. In the event of bad weather we have provisionally booked Towers School Sports Hall.
 
Whilst we will ensure that it is a fun and enjoyable environment the aim of the camp is to provide more intensive coaching to enable the children to become better players in time for next season when some will be moving up to the Under 14 group.
 
In order to provide this opportunity the coaches have agreed to provide their time and we should have at least 4 coaches for each day.
 
However we are limiting the number of places to 26 children and these will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
 
In order to secure your child’s place you will need to be in the first 26 to contact either John Cunningham or Alan Hart and you will need to pay the £40 that we are charging for the camp as soon as possible.

There were four awards for each age group – best batsman, best bowler, best fielder and best all-rounder.
 
The winners in the Under 10 group were: Best batsman – Matthew Kay, best bowler – Ben Askey-Brown, best fielder – Edward Milloy and best all-rounder – Anthony Mowl.
 
The winners in the Under 12 group were: Best batsman – Dan Beale, best bowler – Rhys Johnson, best fielder – Matthew Hambrook and best all-rounder – Sammy Judge.
 
The winners in the Under 14 group were: Best batsman – Peter Moss, best bowler – Alex Hutton, best fielder – Robin Miller and best all-rounder – Alex Rippin.
 
The winners in the Under 16 group were: Best batsman – Nick Jones, best bowler – Liam Bowman, best fielder – Robert Knott and best all-rounder – Clinton Wesly.

The club has been awarded £50,000 by Sport England through their ‘Inspired Facilities’ programme which is part of the legacy funding for the 2012 London Olympics.

 
As many of you know we have been planning for some time to renovate or replace the clubhouse and bar. It was built back in 1965 using volunteer labour but is rapidly approaching its sell-by date! Ideally we would like a new building that gives us a bit more space, perhaps adds some more toilets and a proper lobby entrance. We could then hold more social events as well as being able to hire the building out to other community groups in Kennington.

A cricket club in Ashford has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.
 
The Inspired Facilities Fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.
 
Kennington Cricket Club will receive £50,000 of National Lottery funding to replace their aging clubhouse on their ground in Ulley Road. The club, which has played on the ground since 1882, provides a rich sporting and community resource with over 50 adult and 100 junior members. The new building will serve other sports and community groups in the village and complements the many other recent improvements that have been made to the ground.
 
Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: ‘This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for Ashford.’
 
Club President, Dr Peter Grant, said: ‘This award is further testimony to the vitality of the club and the high esteem in which it is held. I can remember my father and his friends building the old clubhouse themselves in 1965. He told me it cost £150! I’m afraid the new one will cost rather more but this award ensures the project will go ahead in the next few months.’
 
Local MP Damien Green said: ‘I am delighted that Sport England has recognised the tremendous work of Kennington cricket Club with this award. The club is one of the oldest in Ashford and their development of junior cricket and involvement with local community is exactly what we need.’
 
Kennington Cricket Club’s is one of hundreds of projects across England benefitting from Lottery investment through the second round of the Inspired Facilities Fund. And Sport England today launched a further £10 million funding round to help local community sports groups to upgrade their facilities. Places People Play is being delivered by Sport England, working in partnership with the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) with the backing of The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the London 2012 Inspire mark.
 
LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe, said: ‘This is a fantastic project that will deliver a real legacy to the people of Kennington from the London 2012 Games. It will provide a whole range of sporting opportunities for young people through improved facilities and will I hope inspire them to take up sport.’

A big thank you to everyone who attended the quiz on Saturday evening, we took £260 behind the bar.

This is a perfect opportunity to not only have a great night, but to help support the club with it’s fundraising for the much needed renovation of the Pavilion.

Many thanks to all those who visited our tombola stall at the Kennington Summer Fayre yesterday, and special thanks to those who helped organise, run and donated prizes to the stall.

 
The event was a huge success and after giving 15% of the money raised to the Kennington Fayre Committee, we made £689.48 which will go to the club renovation fund.
 
It goes without saying that this was a combined effort from everyone which made the day a success. Plans are already underway to make 2013′s stall bigger and better.

KCC Tombola

 
We will have a stall at this year’s Kennington Summer Fayre on Saturday 30th June, running a tombola with ‘bottled’ prizes. As such, we are looking for prize donations from club members and supporters – any drink in any sized bottle would be gratefully received.
 
Any donations should be made before 28th June.
 
All proceeds made from the attraction will go to the club and two charities nominated by the Kennington Fayre Committee.

Congratulations go to our U14 members, Alex Rippin and Peter Moss, who have both been selected to play for the District U14 team.

 
Having attended the District Coaching Program over the winter, the two boys were selected to play for the Ashford District Under 14 team in a recent match against Swale.
 
They are the first children from our junior section to be selected for the District team in our 5 years. With progress being made at all age groups we hope to see more of our juniors representing the Ashford District in the coming years.

A new 4m x 2m storage container has been constructed in the far corner of the ground as a home for the new nets and practice surface.

The 2012 season is underway and has begun in winning style, overcoming Selling Cavaliers in a rain affected match.

Last week-end we held our first Natwest Cricket Force weekend. Members of the Club, family and supporters turned up to help prepare the Club for the coming season. A general tidy up was organised together with extensive work on the ground and playing square.
 
The pavilion and changing rooms needed painting as did the new storage container, whilst the sight screen needed some repair and cleaning.
 
Thanks to a sponsorship scheme from the ECB, paint and other materials were obtained from the Wolseley group and the work was completed with some time to spare by Sunday afternoon.
 
With the general success of this event the Club will look to repeat it in early 2013 and will be looking to involve more local companies and organisations.

Our congratulations go to Maria Harriman who has been selected to be part of the Kent under 12 girls cricket squad for 2012.

 
Maria, who is a talented batsman, undertook extensive trials against girls from throughout Kent and just before Christmas was given the news that she was one of the chosen group who would represent Kent at this age group for 2012.
 
We hope that this is the start of great things for Maria and that she enjoys the challenge that faces her.
As a further sign of our progress I am also pleased to announce that for the first time we have 5 of our boys taking part in the District Coaching sessions over the winter. The boys, Dan Beale in the Under 12’s, James Turner, Peter Moss, Edward Miller and Alex Rippen in the Under 14’s are now waiting to hear if they have been selected to represent the Ashford District in 2012. Good luck to you all!
